An Electronic Filing Identification Number is issued by the IRS to authorize individuals and businesses to electronically submit tax returns. Without it, you cannot legally operate as a paid tax preparer or run a tax office.
This is not a license. This is not a certification. This is a federal requirement. Every ERO, every tax office, every service bureau sub-office needs an active EFIN tied to a physical location before a single return is filed.
If you're serious about operating a legitimate tax business, this is step one. Everything else comes after.
You must create or access an IRS e-Services account using ID.me verification. This is where the EFIN application lives and where your status will be tracked.
The IRS runs a suitability check on all applicants. This includes a credit check, tax compliance review, and criminal background review. Clean records are required.
You will need your business name, EIN, physical location address, and business structure documented before you begin the application.
A valid Preparer Tax Identification Number must be in place before applying for an EFIN. Your PTIN identifies you as a paid tax preparer. The EFIN authorizes your business to file.
Your EFIN is tied to a specific business address. A PO Box does not qualify. You need a verifiable physical location where your tax business operates.
IRS processing typically takes 45 days from the date of application. Do not wait until filing season to start this process. Plan ahead or you will not be ready.
The IRS does not rush this process. If you are planning to file returns this season and you do not have your EFIN, you need to start the application now. Download the free eBook and get a walkthrough booked so you know exactly what to do and when.
